Gone are the days when putting in fence posts took all day and was a back breaking job even for 2 people. Portek have released a hand held petrol post driver (pile driver) which can be operated by one person. The Portek Post Driver is powered by a single cylinder 52cc 2-stroke engine producing 1.42kW of power. The Post Driver comes complete with 3 fence post adaptors capable of taking posts up to 4” in diameter. Easy to operate the driver fits over the top of the post and with a hydraulic action pushes / drives the post into the ground. The 52cc engine helps the Post Driver power through heavy or compacted soil.

As the Post Driver uses a two stroke engine the fuel (petrol/engine oil) is mixed before adding to the fuel tank. Portek recommend a 25:1 petrol:oil mixture. Failure to mix the fuel can damage the engine.

The Portek Post Driver can be truly portable as it is housed in a sturdy abs plastic case for storage or transport. You will also receive 3 x fence post size adaptors, lubricating grease, toolkit and instruction booklet.

After deliberating whether a petrol post rammer was just going to be a waste of money, we hired a £1500 honda version for the day, then was the issue of would a £800 machine be any good? Well to our pleasure yes it is, you will need to make a pilot hole for the larger stakes 100mm with a bar, and if the ground is hard it might take a minute to fully drive the stake home, but worth the money, well built, heavy enough but it is liftable by one person, just don’t go planning to knock in 100 stakes a day :) Ideal for the places you can’t get with a tractor post bonker, or for the repairs where you would spend more time putting the tractor bonker on than you would doing the job.

We are using this for putting in Clipex metal posts. It does the job very well. Minor irritant is the fact that the hammer plate is a loose fit, and can drop out. Ideally there would be better fitting for clipex posts. Otherwise, it is a very impressive machine, dealing with stony ground very effectively.
