The Makita EN4950H pole hedge trimmer is the successor of PTR2500 and features many improvements making it more efficient and user friendly.
With a powerful 24.5cc 4-stroke engine that has lower running costs, less noise and lower exhaust emissions this tool is both kinder to the environment and to your pocket.
The overall length is 2550mm making it ideal for hedge trimming where height is an issue and the head adjusts through 13 settings up to 135°. The head folds back 180° for easy storage/transport and the built in clutch prevents the blades from moving while in the folded position.
The multi position engine lubrication system pumps oil around the engine no matter what angle the unit is being operated at even for continuous operation and the trimmer is compact and lightweight to use (6.9kg).

Excellent bit of kit, easy to start, cuts well and good balance. Staff love it!!

The service and advice from Steve at Radmore and Tucker was excellent. The Makita long reach hedge trimmer is well made and should last many years. Being a 4 stroke it is quieter than the 2 stroke machines I’ve had previously and takes unleaded without the need to mix in any oil. The only downside to this machine is the weight. It is heavier than I expected especially when trying to reach across a wide hedge. Other than that, excellent.

  3. Derek Lancaster (verified owner)

The Product is excellent just what I need for my tall conifers, there was just one little hiccup when the blades stopped working, but I E-mailed Radmore and Tucker and they gave me instructions over the phone and that sorted it straight away, I think they are a very good company and I would buy products from them again.

Great service from R & T. The Makita was easy to assemble and started first time. Comfortable to use and has a good reach. Excellent buy.

Initially concerned at choosing a 4 stroke over 2, I needn’t have worried. It’s a lot quieter, much easier to start and chops it’s way through the foliage just as easily. Maintenance is minimal and well thought out with easy pictures and text in the guide that comes with it.
I think all of these pole cutters inevitably feel a little heavier than the usual hand held machines but it’s just a case of finding the right balance point and taking a breather every 15 minutes or so if it’s a concern. Which will be fine because your work rate will be so much faster with not having climb steps or ladders to get at the higher branches.
I’ve cut conifer, laurel and hornbeam so far and a job that previously took a few hours due to moving the steps or ladders around is now a half hour snip. Probably a lot safer too with both feet on the ground.
And being Makita, you know it’s going to last.

    Fantastic 24hr delivery from R & T.
I chose the Makita EN4950H with its MM4, 4 stroke engine because I can’t be fussed with with 2 strokes with their petrol/oil fuelling and their greater noise levels.
Although this Makita Long Reach Trimmer was comparatively easy to assemble and started first time, getting the shaft to engage with the trimmer tool was frustratingly tricky. It’s a pity the Makita don’t put an indicator mark to show when it is properly engaged.
Yes these pole cutters are a little heavier but if you’re doing a large amount of work a full harness makes the job easier.
It looks well made so I’m confident that it will be easy to maintain and will last.

  12. Ryan Eastwood (verified owner)

High quality piece of machinery at a great price. Engine runs quietly, doesn’t overly vibrate during use and cuts great! A little heavy but rather that than light and flimsy. Classy touch sending a fill of oil and strap. Great service, would definitely use again.

  13. Geoffrey Barber (verified owner)

Haven’t used trimmer yet however looks and feels excellent quality. The delivery from Radmore was perfect and assembly was relatively straightforward so am happy to recommend product on this basis.

A good quality machine ,starts easily and is very quiet. The machine cuts well and is very frugal on fuel.excellent service and delivery from R and T

Very easy to put together and started on the second pull. Used it today for first time and was very impressed with how light and easy it was to cut a high privet. Only down fall was having to wait nearly 6 weeks for delivery I’m self employed and it lost me a few jobs.

This is the first petrol tool we’ve ever bought so we were a bit apprehensive.
Delivery was quick and it came ready assembled with some fuel, which was a nice surprise. Build quality is very good.
Starting was a bit difficult due to my own fault as I did not have the switch in the operate position so flooded it (removed the spark plug and left for 10 mins and it was fine). Started really easily then.
It not too noisy and not too heavy and the vibration was also ok. We only have a single hedge so it was done in less than half an hour, much quicker than with a mains trimmer and no more cutting through the cable.
Overall we are extremely pleased with it and wish we had more hedges !
Thanks to Radmore & Tucker for their excellent service.
We are both in our 50’s and have bad backs so if we can use this anyone can.
It’s well worth buying the 4-stroke rather than a cheaper 2-stroke as you don’t have to mix the oil and fuel and from videos we watched on YouTube it’s a lot quieter and with less vibration.

This review covers 2 points, (i) the machine and (ii) the purchase experience with Radmore & Tucker. The Makita EN4950H is an excellent bit of kit – a must have if you have tall hedges on your property. The fact that it is a 4 stroke makes a significant difference in the ease of starting, its power, balance of the machine, and the noise. It is heavy to use over a prolonged period and the shoulder harness does assist, as does the forward handle. The only slight downside is that it is manufactured in China, to Makita standards, so its durability will be interesting to monitor. The purchase experience with Radmore & Tucker was excellent – very helpful advice and updates on delivery. This is the second item I have bought within in a month from them as I was so impressed the first time! Good service does make a big difference!

I decided to buy a long reach hedge trimmer to keep the high laurel hedge at the end of our garden under control after the guy who used to cut it for us stopped cutting hedges. I cut it last Saturday in the sunshine using a combination of my regular length Ryobi electric hedge cutter for close reach and my new Makita for long reach and the high stuff. The Makita is very well balanced and easy to put together and use. I quickly got used to handling and carrying it using the supplied shoulder strap although I had a few aches the next day after spending a day hedge cutting. I’ve just purchased a hedge cutter blade cleaning spray to clean the resin residue left by the laurel of the blade. The Makita will pay for itself over the next few years so I’m very pleased with my purchase.

A really well made Makita Pole Hedge Trimmer, I used it on a tall hawthorn hedge cuts really well , a bit heavier than I thought it would be , other than that a good machine.

  20. John (verified owner)

Bit heavy, not the most powerful and as someone else pointed out the fuel cap vibrates lose during operation. On the whole though a pretty good cutter with solid build.
Excellent service from these guys though and a very prompt delivery. Top marks there.
    Thanks.
