- Individual tool without battery and without charger
- For medium-sized areas of lawn
- Sequential battery discharge with automatic switchover feature
- Cutting height can be adjusted from 20 mm to 100 mm
- Fitted with 55-litre grass collection box with fill-level display
This lawn mower is built with a rugged polymer deck that is lightweight, rust proof and double layered for additional stability. It’s UV resistant, has a 51 cm cutting width and single point height adjustment that is adjustable between 20 – 100 mm. The RMA 453 PV is part of the AP System range of tools and is powered by an AP 300 S battery that is interchangeable with other machines across the range. This lawn mower is fitted with sequential battery discharge, which means the lawn mower has an automatic switchover feature – so when one battery runs out of power, it will automatically switch over to the next one. On a full charge with the recommended AP 300 S battery you will be able to mow lawns up to 450 m2, which becomes 900 m2 when the lawn mower is used with two AP 300 S batteries.
The RMA 453 PV has 4 different ways of mowing. No additional tools are required but we do recommend you refer to the owner’s manual before working. You can either:
- Cut & collect with the grass catcher box fitted
- Cut & drop by removing the grass catcher box
- Side discharge with the flap that is integrated into the deck
- Mulch with the multi-blade and mulching attachment
The RMA 453 PV has a built-in electronic interface on the mono-handlebar which shows useful information such as the battery charge, the ability to switch between mowing modes and adjust the motor speed levels. The comfort mono-handlebar allows easy access to the grass catcher box, making it easier to remove and empty when it’s full – plus, thanks to the fill level indicator on the grass catcher box you’ll know exactly when to empty the box too! The 55-litre grass catcher box is ergonomically designed and easy to fully open for fast emptying. The sturdy mono-handlebar is height adjustable and foldable for compact storage after use.

The Stihl RMA 453.3 lawnmower turns out to be an excellent machine, as I had hoped. Stihl’s product descriptions are not the best and a couple of concerns I had in advance have proved to be unfounded. Having seen a machine ‘in the plastic’ I noticed that it has TWO battery bays for Stihl AP batteries and I was worried that these would need to be filled with two fully-charged AP batteries at all times. This is not the case. The bays are marked ‘1’ and ‘2’ and only bay 1 needs to be loaded. Clearly, if you have a large area of lawn, loading both bays with charged batteries will provide much better endurance.
I was also concerned that my two AP 300 batteries, bought previously with/for other devices, would be woefully underpowered/not work at all with the lawnmower, as the literature advises an AP 300 S. In fact, they work perfectly well. With my newly-acquired AP 300 S battery, mowing my large lawn uses up only half the charge, which is impressive.
A pity that Stihl is taking the mickey with the battery prices – AP 300 S costs £240 minimum. Considering its fairly rudimentary components, this item is probably over-priced by a factor of two.

Bought to replace an aging Hayter Harrier 48 Autodrive, as I have been moving over to battery power.
First impressions were favourable – nice design, really useful grab handles, great flexibility for storage, and nice having a range of modes for mowing.
My first use was on grass that hadn’t been cut this year, and was littered with beech hedge clippings. The Stihl managed to do the job with relative ease. It only jammed once, thanks to a twig getting between the blade and deck. Yes, it did struggle a bit more than my Hayter might have done, but not by much. I used it on mulch mode and there was barely any visible debris left after mowing.
It clearly pushed the mower’s capabilities, as I managed to drained two AP500S battery packs, but, as this was really a job beyond the mower’s expected scope, I don’t think it did too badly at all. The finished cut looked really nice.
I was pleased at the range of speeds from the Variodrive system, although the mower is so light, I just pushed without assistance. I was also surprised at how manoeuvrable the mower is, especially as it looks rather long.
Only possible negatives – not too sure how durable some of the plastic flaps will be, especially the side exit flap. Also, I did notice a build-up of debris where the two flap apertures are within the deck. Other than those small niggles, I’m pleased with the mower and would happily recommend it.
