The Stihl Advance X-Climb Helmet Set is the first multi-norm helmet from STIHL designed specifically for tree surgeons. The new X-Climb conforms to both; EN 397 (helmets for industrial use “hard hats”) and also EN 12492 (helmets for climbing and mountaineering). This makes the X-Climb perfect for tree surgeons who wear this helmet on the ground as well as in the tree.
Head protection combination in a new, modern design with a good balance. Universally applicable on the ground for wood harvesting and tree care work. Very comfortable to wear thanks to very good ventilation, 4-point chinstrap with magnetic closure and comfortable ratchet adjustment of the headband. High security through reflective stickers. Helmet shell made of UV-stabilized ABS, visor made of nylon for long service life, highly insulating ear defenders SNR 28. Complies with EN 397, EN 12492.
Nylon mesh
Flexible nylon mesh is the most widely used face mask, displaying higher durability and reducing the risk of breakage. Please note that the additional use of safety glasses is highly recommended.
Helmet ventilation
Thermography shows the advantages of a helmet with standard ventilation (right). The temperature fell by two to three degrees and the humidity increased by 50%.
Magnetic chin strap
Chinstrap with a magnetic close for ease of use.
Fits size 50-63cm head.

On paper, the design looks great. It does, in theory, seem to be a great hybrid helmet and is very comfortable to wear. However, mine was returned immediately for a number of reasons.
Firstly the vertical peripheral vision is dreadful. I stood 7 metres away from a wall in my lounge and I compared it to my old helmet (Husky Forest Technical Forest). Looking straight ahead, 4 metres worth of horizontal ceiling disappeared from view when wearing the Advanced X-Climb. That’s a lot less vision and a lot more neck craning to compensate as a result.
Secondly, I found it feeling very front heavy. With the visor down, I can feel the weight pulling my head forward and down with it. Thirdly, the visor is pretty shapeless and uninspiring and mine came slightly bent, which would have been a bit annoying to fix had I been keeping it. It’s nowhere near as good as the Advance X-Vent or Husky Technical Forest’s visor.
Finally, I think it would be incredibly hot to wear with the amount of padding there, especially around the forehead. It is well ventilated, but all that foam pressed against your head is going to retain heat.
The noise reduction is great and it fits down easily and snuggly. The magnetic strap would take a bit of getting used to, but I think once cracked would be a nice touch. For me though the visor’s significant drawbacks made this helmet a non-starter.
Radmore and Tucker were exceptional with their delivery and refund speed; I’ll almost certainly order from them again, it’s just on this occasion Stihl haven’t really helped them out!
