The RMA 443 V (RMA 443.3 V) from STIHL is a battery-powered self-propelled lawn mower designed for users looking to cut medium-sized to large lawns at home. This lawn mower is built with a rugged polymer deck that is lightweight, rust proof and double layered for additional stability. It’s UV resistant, has a 41 cm cutting width and single point height adjustment that is adjustable between 20 – 100 mm. The RMA 443 V is part of the AK System range of tools and is powered by an AK 30 S battery that is interchangeable with other machines across the range. There are two slots in the powerhead for two AK batteries, so when the first runs out of power you can quickly switch to the second. On a full charge with the recommended AK 30 S battery you will be able to mow lawns up to 350 m2.
The RMA 443 V has 4 different ways of mowing. No additional tools are required but we do recommend you refer to the owner’s manual before working. You can either:
- Cut & collect with the grass catcher box fitted
- Cut & drop by removing the grass catcher box
- Side discharge with the flap that is integrated into the deck
- Mulch by switching it to mulch mode
The comfort mono-handlebar allows easy access to the grass catcher box, making it easier to remove and empty when it’s full – plus, thanks to the fill level indicator on the grass catcher box you’ll know exactly when to empty the box too! The 52-litre grass catcher box is ergonomically designed and easy to fully open for fast emptying. The sturdy mono-handlebar is height adjustable and foldable for compact storage after use.

I purchased this mower at the end of the mowing season so I have only used it once for a final cut. However, I was impressed with its performance, lightness, quietness and ease of use. I have always used a petrol powered Honda mower which had become awkward to use as the drive wheels had worn , so kept slipping on moist grass, the wear was caused largely by the awkwardness of releasing the drive lever on the handlebar without also releasing the cutter lever ,causing the wheels to spin at the end of a line of mowing. The drive lever on the Stihl is cleverly shaped to avoid the right side end of the handlebar, so at the end of a line ,simply removing your left hand from handlebar allows the drive lever to spring back to the off position, while the right hand thumb can still hold the cutters in the on mode while the mower is turned around. The grass collection box is easy to remove and to empty. The mower was also able to suck up fallen leaves from the lawn.
The other plus point I found was that my petrol mower used almost a full tank of fuel to complete a full cut of my lawn, whereas the Stihl starting with a fully charged AK30S battery, completed the cut and still had 3 led charge lights showing on the battery, so running costs will be appreciably lower than the petrol mower.
The only negative point of the Stihl mower I found was in setting the cutting height as the mechanism was quite stiff to move, possibly because it was new and it required quite a bit of force and vibration to set it initially. I will ensure it is well lubricated at the beginning of next season so I can hopefully reduce the cutting height more easily.
Finally, I thoroughly recommend this mower and fully understand why Which? Gave it a best buy status in spite of it being quite expensive.
