I have not done a lot of work with it yet so cannot vouch for long term quality and reliability but after a few hours use I am loving it.

I bought the unit bare because I already have 3x 4Ah Makita batteries which are 5 years old and I have part-built a timber frame house with (along with Makita 6″ circular saw and impact driver).

Even with these 5 yr-old 4Ah batteries the saw works very well – I have green hardwood up to 9 or 10 inches diameter which it cuts with no problem, outside temperature around 10C. Run time is obviously less compared to a petrol saw but enough for my purposes, working for an hour or so at a time I still had some juice left in the batteries. That’s not continuous runtime of course but includes stopping to move the timber around, both out in the field trimming branches off, cutting to lengths to fit the car boot and also back at home when cutting and stacking. I thought I would need to buy a fourth battery but so far haven’t needed to. I have the twin fast charger which charges 2 batteries from flat in half an hour or so.

The tool-less bar clamp and chain tension adjustment work well – so easy in fact that it encourages you to adjust it more often as it warms and cools and so avoid the chance of the chain coming off.

The quietness is wonderful (no need for ear defenders) and I won’t miss the expense, trouble and annoyance of trying to get my cheap McCulloch petrol chainsaw running reliably. Despite the Makita costing more than twice as much (even with no batteries) I am sure it will work out overall cheaper than my petrol chainsaw.

Be aware that if ordering on a Friday you will not get next day delivery for that weekend.

After a short aquaintance I am very pleased with this saw, a lot quicker and less effort than my bow saw and my petrol chainsaw willl never start when i want it. Probably not very robust on heavier tasks so I’ll just have to persevere with starting the Stihl .
