The RMA 248 from STIHL is a battery-powered push-along lawn mower designed for entry-level users looking to cut small to medium-sized lawns at home. Part of a new range of 2 Series battery-powered lawn mowers, it’s a lightweight and quiet mower that is fitted with innovative key features that make this the ideal choice for home gardeners.

This lawn mower is built with a sheet steel deck, has a 46 cm cutting width and single point height adjustment that is adjustable between 20 – 100 mm. The RMA 248 is part of the AK System range of tools and is powered by an AK 20 battery that is interchangeable with other machines across the range. There are two slots in the powerhead for two AK batteries, so when the first runs out of power you can quickly switch to the second. On a full charge with the recommended AK 20 battery you will be able to mow lawns up to 220 m2.

The RMA 248 has 4 different ways of mowing. No additional tools are required but we do recommend you refer to the owner’s manual before working. You can either:

  • Cut & collect with the grass catcher box fitted
  • Cut & drop by removing the grass catcher box
  • Side discharge with the flap that is integrated into the deck
  • Mulch with the multi-blade and mulching attachment

The comfort mono-handlebar allows easy access to the grass catcher box, making it easier to remove and empty when it’s full – plus, thanks to the fill level indicator on the grass catcher box you’ll know exactly when to empty the box too! The 52-litre grass catcher box is ergonomically designed and easy to fully open for fast emptying. The sturdy mono-handlebar is height adjustable and foldable for compact storage after use.

    Unpacked on arrival, assembly was easy and ready for use in no time.
    I already had two AK200 batteries so set to work straight away, although the batteries were showing fully charged they had not been on the charger for about a month. My lawn is around 150 sq mtrs and was quite long, adjusting the cutting height is easy to adjust with one hand. The first battery lasted around three quarters of the lawn before having to change to the second which finished with four charge bars left so plenty more use if needed. I was very impressed with the cut, even going over clumps of high grass the cutter kept everything the same length and looked good. The grass box has a full indicator which I thought might be a bit of a gimmick but I was proved wrong and found it very useful. I haven’t used the side shoot or mulching unit as yet but both are very easy to setup. A week later I went over the grass again after scarifying which was a breeze and only used one bar of charge. I had been used to a petrol self propelled mower before and my lawn is on a slope so noticed the difference when mowing up the slope having to push the mower but I guess if it got too much I could always go across instead. Overall I am very impressed with this mower and looking forward to many years of electric mowing. Ordering and delivery from Radmore & Tucker was great too.
